selection criteria

Vehicles Excluded:

Cars developed by universities (World Solar Challenge, Formula Student, Baja Sae)

including for research projects
Nobody doubts that the KAIST Concept is a great project, but it is not considered as a brand since it is developed by a University: KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology) without commercial intention.

Craft vehicles developed without commercial intention

- Vehicles with more than nine seats

- Handlebar vehicles except rickshaws and some cargo vehicles. Trikes are excluded

- Vehicles with more than four wheels (except some big suvs) and tracked vehicles

- Vehicles in which the driver's position is straddled

- Military vehicles except the Humvees and APCs. Are not included, for example, recognition vehicles

- Cyclo-car, velocar or gravity cars.

- Racing teams that define themselves as their own brand.

The picture shown is not an example of this case. It is merely illustrative. Some teams purchase competition vehicles, and after some modifications, they rename their vehicle with the name of the team. Usually the model is 01, 02. Racing brands based on an existing model are not allowed, even if they meet the criteria established in the project if there is no commercial interest. Unless it is clearly registered and accepted as a trademark. This applies especially in small competitions, or in larger ones like the Dakar where some teams create a vehicle for a particular competition, without commercial interest. Usually bears the name of the driver or team. They are considered as a creation or a great workshop job, but not a car manufacturer. Some Formula One brands do not sell cars, but they are brands because they are clearly registered as such.

- Golf carts

- Any type of tractor, construction vehicle, wheeled tourist trains, or agricultural vehicle

According to the Spanish legilation, it contemplates all these vehicles like Special vehicles. This legislation has been consulted when a doubt has arisen with any vehicle.
Boletín Oficial del Estado  - Real Decreto e 2822/1998, of 23 December, which approves the General Regulation of Vehicles

- Service vehicles such as road sweepers

Neither are included:  Vehicles designed to run on railroad tracks. Diwheels or unycicles.. Airport vehicles.

Brands Excluded:

- Industries that assemble vehicles, so they are not considered production plants.

As example: Kuozui Motors, some authors consider it as a brand, but it is a factory that initially belonged to Hino Motors and to Hotai Motors. Now it manufactures for Toyota. It is not considered as a brand because the vehicles that leave the factory are Toyotas, not vehicles of the hypothetical brand Kuozui.

- Similarly, there are no included racing modifiers, nor those that extend the off-road capabilities of a vehicle. It is not a criterion of inclusion or exclusion the quality of the vehicles, to be a subjective opinion. If a automaker built a car from scratch, though ineffective, it is included. If a company performs an excellent preparation, with great engineering work behind it, it is excluded if it does not modify the chassis.

(Not included as a brand, because it isn't)

- Manufacturers or suppliers of components. Special mention to some suppliers that are defined theirself as brand, it usually happens in buggies, hot rods ... For example: Usawholesales
Neither are those suppliers who usually modify vehicles

HKS it is not an automaker, it is a supplier
That is why brands like Brabus, Mansory, TechArt are not included

- They are not considered subsidiary brands of the own brand, such as Volkswagen Brazil or Ford Australia, although others produce some exclusive models. Special reference to the inclusion in the project of Chinese subsidiary brands created from the union of two or more brands. But, they are not considered sub-brands, this is usual in Chinese brands. Nor are included new companies created in other countries to licensed manufacturer.

- Brands that only provide engineering services to other brands are not included. For example Kirchhoff Automotive.  Design studies are included whenever they have manufactured a vehicle, at least as a prototype in order to sell their technology or promote the brand.

Tuning, modifiers are not included. They are not automakers

- Companies that modify vehicles are not considered unless they design a new chassis for this. The brand must have its own chassis number. Therefore, bodyworkers are not included. The brand could be considered only if the modification is radical, starting exclusively with the chassis completely clean.

Veilside is not considered as an automaker.

- Similarly, they are not considered official modifiers, such as AMG for Mercedes, FPV for Ford, Mugen for Honda or HSV for Holden.
Only Alpina, RAM and RUF are automakers, and there are recognized as an independent brand
Alpine, the famous Renault modifier has been included because they are manufacturing independent racing models.

- Manufacturers of vehicle chassis, usually for rally or Stock Racing, are not considered if they don't manufacturer semi-complete or complete vehicles, and marketable as such. They are also not considered manufacturers of Fiberglass kits for rallyes or Gran Turismo vehicles.

One example is the Lightning Chassis company that only designs the chassis, or the company CTS Chassis that does it for vehicles Nascar. Many Sprint companies have not been included, such as Eagle Sprint, Maxim Racing Chassis or LeftHander because they only manufacture the chassis and don't offer the complete or semi-complete vehicle. Another example is Bembo Fab and Benson Brothers that manufacture touring vehicles for the SCCA championships.

That is, as special attention is given to using their own chassis to exclude brands, but on the other hand brands are also excluded if they manufacture only the chassis.

R2B2 is not considered as an automotive brand in the project because it manufactures a racing chassis for an existing vehicle, and they doesn't design a new vehicle.

- Vehicles that only transform vehicles into limos or armor vehicles, as well as any other type of functional modification, such as monster trucks

- Brands that only convert the vehicle into electric, such as Ecotricity with its Nemesis model. Another example, among many, is Phoenix Motors, a brand that is gaining a lot of strength and despite it is being considered as a brand, it is ruled out because they converts a Ssangyong into an electric car.

- Historical brands that only provide restoration services or spare parts are not included. They are included if the provides the complete body and chassis. For example Deep Sanderson or Colchester are still active, but only offering support to these vehicles. It is not considered as a current automotive brand, as it only supplies parts to classic vehicles and is far from intending to manufacture a vehicle. If it is a brand with a great historical importance can be considered only if it maintains activity, because it is more likely to produce a vehicle again. These brands are kept in track, an example is Hispano-Suiza. There are only a few exceptions considered

Are included:

- There are considered those brands that despite not having manufactured a vehicle yet, they intend to build a vehicle and they are at some stage of the process. The exclusion criterion is based on the sum of several factors. One of them is that they have a team behind them, the brands that do not have a formal working group established much more likely to be excluded from the project. The progress of the project is also considered, and it is not possible to evaluate only a couple of renders of a model. It is not enought, it is valued if any prototype is built. It is considered the trajectory of the company, giving more credibility, and therefore more likely that this project is carried out, if that company has created a vehicle of any type previously. This criterion is more subjective than the rest, but some brands can not be considered as self-defined as such if they only have some renders. It simply has to denote some seriousness in the project. In these cases, they are labeled: project

- Subsidiary brands are included as long as they design and manufacture their own and different models to their parent company, such as Porsche is a subsidiary of Volkswagen. An example of a discarded subsidiary brand is Fiat Light Commercial Vehicles S.p.A, which despite they design their vehicles, they do this  for Fiat (which is not the brand just mentioned), for Iveco and collaborates with PSA. That is, it is a subsidiary that designs for another brand belonging to the group, among others, but not for itself.

- Automakers that are not in current production if they are at least in the process of development of some automobile.
